TV: Corey Stoll lands lead role in Guillermo del Toro’s vampire series, ‘The Strain’

It was announced back in September that Guillermo del Toro had finally been given the go ahead to develop The Strain into a TV series, and now comes the first piece of casting news. Corey Stoll (below, House of Cards) has been given the lead role in the vampire series, which is based on novel trilogy written by del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

Stoll will play Dr Ephraim Goodweather who is New York’s head of the Center for Disease Control’s “Canary Team.”  The team investigates the appearance of a mysterious virus and band together with everyday New Yorkers in order to combat the growing threat against humanity. Lost’s Carlton Cuse is on-board as showrunner, and when first announced, he said of the series “These are very scary vampires. These are not romantic vampires. They will give you nightmares.”

Del Toro said of the casting announcement:

“To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task. To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather – who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable, and which anchors the narrative of the series – requires amazing talent and craft.  Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again.”

Synopsis for the books (courtesy of Amazon)

A plane lands at JFK and mysteriously ‘goes dark’, stopping in the middle of the runway for no apparent reason, all lights off, all doors sealed. The pilots cannot be raised. When the hatch above the wing finally clicks open, it soon becomes clear that everyone on board is dead — although there is no sign of any trauma or struggle. Ephraim Goodweather and his team from the Center for Disease Control must work quickly to establish the cause of this strange occurrence before panic spreads. The first thing they discover is that four of the victims are actually still alive. But that’s the only good news. And when all two hundred corpses disappear from various morgues around the city on the same night, things very rapidly get worse. Soon Eph and a small band of helpers will find themselves battling to protect not only their own loved ones, but the whole city, against an ancient threat to humanity.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
