After endless trailers and TV spots, Paramount have today released the very first clip from JJ Abrams’s sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. The clip features Spock (Zachary Quinto) in a life threatening situation while stuck in a volcano, and Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is left with the difficult decision to save his friend, or obey the rules and let him die.

On an alien planet, the directive Kirk is struggling to obey is this:

As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Star Fleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Star Fleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation. — Starfleet General Order number 1

Kirk even asks what Spock would do, and we get the exact response we expected. Spock also speaks the line “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”. An exciting clip indeed which is a fast paced welcome back to the crew of The Enterprise. The fast moving camera whips around to re-introduce our favourite characters, and most of them at least get a line to say. A clever choice for a clip, with no Benedict Cumberbatch in sight!

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
