Fast & Furious 6 exploded onto our screens on Friday and went straight into the number 1 slot in the UK and Ireland, and Universal’s biggest opening day film ever, making $4.6 million, this years 2nd best in that market, with Iron man 3 at $4.7 million.
It even surpasses the $3.6 million figure that Fast & Furious 4 opened with in 2009
Fast & Furious 6 had its global premiere in London, where the film was set, and made sense for Universal to hold its initial opening there. Plus, the UK, which is the most lucrative foreign market for the first five Fast & Furious films, brought in more than $30 million in 2011. The 5 films have also brought in $625 million worldwide and Universal has high hopes for number 6.
Directed by Justin Lin and screenplay by Chris Morgan, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favourites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.
The film opens on Friday 24th May in North America and in 59 international territories.
