The latest batch of clips have arrived from Nicolas Winding Refn’s stunning looking new film, Only God Forgives. The second pairing of Refn and actor Ryan Gosling has made its way to Cannes, and I am very excited to hear what people think of it once it has screened. Us mere movie buffs who can’t be at Cannes will simply have to wait, but thankfully these three new clips can fill that void until the movie gets a release later this year.
The first two clips mainly focus on Kristin Scott Thomas’ monstrous Mother figure, and really shows what an overpowering, and quite frightening character she really is. Gosling appears in the second clip as Julian, and it is clear he takes his orders from his Mother. The final clip, although brief shows Julian about to get into a tricky situation with the films main villain Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm).
Again the style Refn brings here is astonishing, and his use of neon lighting and almost dreamlike pacing are stunning. The final clip appears as if the characters are paused while Julian walks towards them, and Refn has clearly gone to town with his latest film. This is set to be one of the best films of the year, no question.
Only God Forgives will have its world premiere at Cannes. The film arrives in UK cinemas August 2nd.
Only God Forgives is written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. The violent revenge thriller stars Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Burke, Vithaya Pansringarm and Yayaying.
Ten years ago in Bangkok Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.
When Julian’s brother kills a prostitute, the police reaches out to retired cop Chang, known as the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughters murderer, then restores order by chopping off the man’s right hand.
Julian’s mother Jenna, the head of a powerful criminal organization, arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She orders Julian to find his killers and raise hell.
Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.
