Lars von Triers “groundbreaking” ‘Nymphomaniac’ sex scenes explained…

You probably all know by now that Lars von Triers much talked about new film, Nymphomaniac, will be released in both a softcore, and hardcore version. It has also been widely reported that the cast may have to have real sex during filming,  with Shia LaBeouf confirming this saying: the shooting script carried a disclaimer warning would-be stars that they will be “doing it for real.”

However, it has now been reported that while the main cast will be ‘pretending’ to have sex, von Trier is using the same approach he did in Antichrist, where he will have body doubles performing the real sex scenes, and then digitally merging the two images to make it appear like the actual cast are having sex. This massive post production job is said to be what is stopping the film from showing at Cannes this year, because it is simply too big a job to rush.

Producer Louise Vesth told The Hollywood Reporter:

“We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles who really did have sex and in post we will digitally combine the two,” Vesth explained. “So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”

She also explained how von Trier was using new techniques during the sex scenes to do something completely new, and said they were  “using double exposures and imposing words and symbols over the action as part of his storytelling.”

While von Trier has taken it upon himself to not promote his films in any way after the fiasco at Cannes last year, and his Nazi comments, Vesth is hopeful he will open up and start promoting his new film:

“Lars has thrown everything in this one,” she said. “It’s about religion, about God, about philosophy. There’s so much to talk about with this movie. I hope he changes his mind and starts giving interviews again.”

One distributor who saw early footage of the film described it as “groundbreaking…like nothing [they’ve] ever seen”.

Nymphomaniac is written and directed by Lars Von Trier.

The cast  includes Willem Dafoe, Jean-Marc Barr, Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgard, Connie Nelson, Jamie Bell, Udo Kier, Christian Slater,Caroline Goodall, Kate Ashfield, Saskia Reeves and Omar Shargawi. Von Trier regular Charlotte Gainsbourg will be playing the lead character of ‘nymphomaniac’ Joe as an adult, while model Stacy Martin will play the younger role of the character.

Nymphomaniac will be told over eight chapters by self-confessed nymphomaniac Joe.  The film will be spread across two parts, and a “hardcore” version, and a softer more audience friendly version will be made available.

“NYMPHOMANIAC is the light and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe.

On a cold winter’s evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi-unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-?out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
