As we get ever closer to the release of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, you do have to ask “are we seeing too much now?” We probably are, and considering the film still has six weeks til its release, I do worry the mystery might be lost with this constant barrage of images, trailers and TV spots. Problem is, I just can’t help wanting to see everything, and so today I present to you some more cool stuff!
Firstly we have a brand new TV spot which features a small amount of new monster footage, and we also have two new monster images for you which can be seen in this months Empire magazine (on sale tomorrow). In the new magazine, del Toro talks about Pacific Rim and explains a little about the fights between the monstrous Kaiju and the giant robots known as Jaegars:
“The first fight is very operatic, theatrical: Wagnerian. It happens in the middle of an iceberg-strewn sea, in the middle of a storm, with huge waves crashing on the Jaeger and Kaiju. We worked really hard at making water a character in this movie, frequently referring to Hokusai or the Fuji wave, and trying to make the water enhanced and add to the drama. This fight tries to quote the majesty of a painting by Goya called the Colossus.”
Del Toro also talks of his love of monsters and all things dark, and explains how this fascination with the dark side started at a very young age:
“There was something weird about me from the beginning. I don’t know exactly when I started loving monsters so much, but it was definitely early. When I was 4 or 5 years old, I would ask my mother, ‘Can I sleep in the coffin tonight?’ and I would lie down in a drawer or I would sleep in a toy box,” del Toro said “There’s even a recording of me, aged three or four, asking for a mandrake root, for Christmas, to use in magic rituals”
Directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by Travis Beacham, Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba (Prometheus), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Charlie Hunnam (Horrible Bosses), Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr, Rinko Kikuchi and Robert Maillet.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Release Date 12th July 2013
