I think Benicio Del Toro is a magnificent actor, and while I was totally blown away by Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness, I can’t help wondering how well Del Toro would have played it. He was offered the role, but turned it down, but that doesn’t mean the actor is afraid of starring in a space based action film.
Deadline is reporting that Del Toro has joined James Gunn’s Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the site reports that Del Toro will be playing a “key role”. While no actual details have been revealed about his character, Deadline reports that the role Del Toro is playing a character that has been optioned for multiple Marvel movies, meaning, he will be a major character as Phase Two comes to an end and Phase Three begins (after The Avengers 2).
The site also reports that Del Toro’s character has not been confirmed to be a hero, and there is every chance he could be playing a villain. This is all speculation right now, and I am merely taking a guess at this, but Del Toro is no hero type actor. He plays villains extremely well, and considering the fact his character is set to appear in further Marvel movies leads me to the conclusion of only one thing: Del Toro will be playing Thanos!
As I said, this is simply guess work, but Thanos is rumoured to be in Guardians of the Galaxy, and will be a sort of background villain for Marvel’s Phase Two. He will be playing a major part in controlling the villains as the Marvel films move forward, and with Del Toro signing up for multiple films, I can’t think he would be playing anyone else.
Here is what Joss Whedon said of Thanos back in April:
“Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful, he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I’ve got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful, but they’re not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”
Here is what we know so far of Guardians of the Galaxy’s cast and plot details:
The leader of Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill AKA Star Lord, has been cast with Chris Pratt playing the role, and the other human based role, Drax the Destroyer, has been filled by WWE legend Dave Bautista. Michael Rooker is playing Yondu, Zoe Saldana will play Gamora, and Lee Pace and Glenn Close have also been cast. John C. Reilly is rumoured to be palying Rhomann Dey.
Per Heat Vision, Zoe Saldana will play Gamora in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The skilled assassin character sports green skin and is that last of her species, which was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. More interestingly, though, is the fact that the character was raised and trained by supervillain Thanos before eventually turning against him. Thanos was glimpsed in the tag at the end of The Avengers and is rumored to be the main villain in The Avengers 2, so one assumes that he’ll also play a major role in the Guardians of the Galaxy story given that Gunn’s film serves as the lead-in to Avengers 2.
Per Deadline: Michael Rooker will play Yondu, who in Marvel lore was a game hunter of a primitive tribe native to Centauri IV, the first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun’s solar system. He eventually bands together with fellow fugitives to form the superhero team.
We already know that James Gunn (Slither, Super) is writing and directing the Marvel film, but apart from a planned release date of August 2014, very little else is known of the film. The characters are not the most well known in the Marvel universe, and already two characters have been given smaller roles in order to ease audiences in to the story. The talking Raccoon called Rocket and the Tree called Groot will take a back step to allow more human-like characters to be used. The space based superhero’s are set to be lead by Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord.
Peter Quill aka Star-Lord was born of a human mother and alien father, and he’s a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. The character will serve as the audience’s introduction to the galactic world of Guardians of the Galaxy in Marvel’s space-set film. Drax the Destroyer is”a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos,”
Deadline describes Guardians of the Galaxy like this: Guardians Of The Galaxy first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1969 but didn’t get its own series until the 1990s. Star-Lord (real name Peter Quill) leads a group of alien superheros who team to protect the solar system from an evil alien race. The good guys are from the future, and another dimension. In the comics, the Guardians worked with The Avengers, so there should be opportunities to use Marvel’s big franchises to help launch the new one.
