Just last week I reported that the sequel to The Purge was already on the way, and now producer Jason Blum has confirmed through his Twitter account. Today the horror producer said through his Twitter feed that “The Purge 2 is in development,” with Universal backing him.
The Purge became a huge success in the US this weekend, taking $36.4 million and knocking Fast and Furious 6 off the top spot. The sequel was always expected, but man this is quick. If you remember in my report last week, a list of films which may receive tax credits from the California Film Commission was revealed, and The Purge 2 was on that list.
Indiewire explains how the tax credits work:
Some of the stipulations for the tax credit require that the production spend at least 75% of their production days in California and that they must begin principal production on the project within 180 days of being approved for the tax credit. The film also has to provide a shooting schedule, scene descriptions, and a synopsis of the script to show that they’re ready to start production. A lot of the application process is happening right now, so it would seem that work on a sequel will be ramping up pretty fast.
No word on whether James DeMonaco will return to write and direct, and nothing has been said of any returning cast members, but producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions will be producing again.
Hopefully the sequel can expand on the idea, and not be quite as contained as the first film. A sequel can only improve on the story, right?
