Back in February, after a very successful US opening for Mama, director Andres Mushietti was hired by Universal to direct a new horror film for them called Bird Box. Now, after months of the film being on the cards, a writer has been hired and all things are finally moving ahead.
Eric Heisserer, who penned the Nightmare On Elm Street and The Thing remakes, has been hired to write the screenplay for Bird Box. The film will be based on the as yet un-released novel written by The High String frontman Josh Malerman. The book is due for release sometime next year as it is not finished yet.
Described as a cross between Children of Men and The Others, Bird Box follows a woman and two children as they travel down a river “in a seemingly post-apocalyptic setting.”
Scott Stuber, Chris Morgan and Barbara Muschietti are attached to produce the project.
The film will be due for release in 2014.
