Two weeks ago it was announced that Jaume Balaguero had begun production on his fourth, and final entry in the classic [Rec] series, [Rec]4: Apocalypse. Balaguero wrote and directed the first two films with Paco Plaza, and the pair decided on making [Rec] 3 and 4 separately. [Rec]3: Genesis received a mixed response from fans of the franchise, and Plaza’s decision to ditch the handheld camera angle was baffling, since this is how the series was conceived. The comedy angle was also strange as the franchise, up to this point, had been deadly serious.
However, Balaguero (Sleep Tight) has said that things are going to be much more brutal in his final film, and I believe the handheld stuff is staying. With production now underway the first still has been released, and it shows Balaguero himself on set, check it out below.
Directed and co-created by Jaume Balaguero, [REC]4 Apocalypse will complete the franchise. The film is due for release on 10th October 2014 in Spain. Release dates for elsewhere are still to be confirmed.
