Despicable Me 2 has finally been knocked off the top of the box office this week as The Conjuring stormed America in its opening weekend, securing $41.5 million in the bag, which is pretty awesome as the film was budgeted at just $20 million. The past four weekends have been dominated by animated films, but as expected, audiences have certainly welcomed the release of a more sinister story! Three other titles have been released this weekend – Turbo, Red 2 and R.I.P.D so there are no surprises in terms of The Conjuring‘s success, but it’s also been reported that sales are way down from 2012, 20% to be precise!! Although this time last year, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was released, which took $160.8 million at the box office, which is quite something to beat!!
The Conjuring is officially the highest making horror film of 2013 but also opened in fewer locations to that of the other films released this week and I expect the film will continue to storm the box office for weeks to come.
As for the three other new releases:
R.I.P.D came in at number 7 in the top 10 making $12.7 million, which bearing in mind the film cost $130 million to make, they’ve got some way to go to break-even!
Red 2 took $18.5 million, which was in line with studio projections, but just a couple million short of what the original Red took ($21.7 million).
Finally, comedy Turbo, starring Ryan Reynolds, has kicked off with a slow start with $21.5 million which is the lowest start for a DreamWorks movie since 2006’s Flushed Away, but it could be put down to bad timing with Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University already in the cinema.
