New character details released for American Horror Story: Coven

Some more information regarding the characters of the upcoming witchy series American Horror Story: Coven have finally been released following a presentation by FX to the Television Critics Association Summer TV press Tour 2013 yesterday. American Horror Story executive producer Tim Minear appeared on stage to give the presentation, along with cast members, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, who Minear stated was only part of the Coven cast, and described them as a “murders row of actresses“.

This is what Deadline has so far reported:

“Kathy Bates will play Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer Marie Delphine LaLaurie in Ryan Murphy’s Americam Horror Story: Coven debuting in October. Bates’ character was a big wheel in New Orleans until a fire broke out in her house in 1834 and people responding to help discovered bound and tortured slaves inside.”

“Angela Bassett, meanwhile, will play Marie Laveau, a Louisiana Creole and Voodoo priestess who also lived in New Orleans in the 19th century.”

“Jessica Lange will play a witch named Fiona, and Sarah Paulson will play her daughter, Cordelia.” If you’re a Shakespeare fan, you’ll notice that Paulson’s character shares the same name as King Lear’s good daughter and apparently this is no coincidence according to Minear.

Minear told the Tour that this year’s themes in the third instalment of American Horror Story are “oppression of minorities and minority groups going after each other and doing the work of the larger culture.” He also emphasised a strong “feminist theme” and a higher “fun quotient,” which “might be a little more welcoming to an audience” than last years series, American Horror Story: Asylum.

TV Guide also provided a bit more information on Jessica Lange’s character, Fiona: “…some of us play witches, some play historical characters… We move back and forth in time so it encompasses a lot of different stories.”

Lange, along with the other fellow female cast members said they knew very little about their respective characters, similar to the other seasons: “It’s been a huge adjustment to work this way without knowing for sure or knowing at all who the character is. It allows you to work very much on the fly. The great thing about this entire cast is that you have to be brave. You just have to jump in and do it and not be cautious because you’ve got 12 episodes to create this character.”

The cast also includes Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Gabourey Sidibe, and Patti LuPone.

Coven is currently being filmed and due to be aired in October.
