Vin Diesel confirms he is voicing Groot in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Marvel can be very secretive, and Vin Diesel is always very open with fans, so while Marvel have not officially confirmed that Diesel is voicing Groot in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Diesel has.

Diesel has been teasing his Marvel connection for a while now, telling fans of a meeting with Marvel, posting pictures on his Facebook page of an old Marvel comic book cover, and being quizzed recently at Comic-Con (though he kept quiet there!). However, just this week Diesel posted a picture of Groot, the talking tree superhero that forms part of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and this got fans speculating if Diesel was to be voicing the animated character.

In an interview with Hero Complex, Diesel has now confirmed that he will indeed be voicing Groot. Here is how part of the interview went:

Hero Complex: OK, so why Groot?

Vin Diesel: I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.

Why did you post a picture of the character on Facebook this weekend?

Diesel: I get inspired by things. So if somebody sends me a book of conceptual art that’s the best character design work I’ve ever seen — I’m not kidding, I see that and I want to be a little cryptic and I want to say something positive. Even if it’s as cryptic as an old, dated image of a character.

Marvel is notoriously secretive about its movies, and you’re very open. Isn’t it mad you’ve been dropping hints about “Guardians”?

Diesel: The last thing they are is mad. I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for “Riddick.” Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy.

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and the cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista.

The film arrives on August 1st 2014.

Will reportedly be set in the future and feature the team fighting an evil race called the Badoom, and in the process they would supposedly travel back in time and cross paths with some of the Avengers team. Speculation says that Thanos, the giant being seen in the post-credits sequence following The Avengers would be in the film andGuardians of the Galaxy would serve as a precursor to The Avengers 2.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
