Grimmfest, based in Manchester, is the UK’s premiere festival of fantastic film, running this year from 3rd to 6th October 2013. The team mark their fifth anniversary with an extra special preview night at the spectacular 1200 seat Art Deco Plaza Super Cinema in Stockport on Wednesday 2nd October 2013.
The centrepiece of the evening will be a screening of the “Best Horror Film Ever Made” (Empire)- the fully restored Fortieth Anniversary HD, Final Cut edition of THE WICKER MAN.
The film tells the story of dour Calvinist cop Seargent Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) who travels to the isolated island community of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. When he arrives he is horrified to find the mocking, uncooperative locals, under the influence of the urbane Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) have reverted to the pagan “Old Religion”…
With its lush and lyrical visuals, thoughtful and darkly witty screenplay and extraordinary, highly influential score by Paul Giovanni, THE WICKER MAN is now quite rightly regarded as a classic of British Cinema.
To celebrate the film’s fortieth anniversary, Studiocanal conducted an extensive worldwide search for lost footage. A rare 35mm US release print was found at the Harvard Film Archives (USA) and sent to London. This newly found footage crucially restores the story order to that which was originally intended and a new digital HD version has now been created. This special screening preempts Studio Canal’s release on DVD/Blu Ray of the Final Cut, on 14th in October.
Grimmfest are delighted to be welcoming Robin Hardy to this year’s Grimmfest and for being able to present the film as he always intended it to be seen. This event is presented in conjunction with the BFI Gothic Season and in collaboration with the new Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.
