Until something is officially released, the Star Wars: Episode VII casting rumours are going to continue. A little over a week ago there were talks of Alex Pettyfur (I Am Number Four, Magic Mike) and Rachel Hurd-Wood (Perfume, An American Haunting, Tomorrow When the War Began) joining the cast in unknown roles, however these names have yet to be confirmed. The rumours go on and on, but today see’s probably the most exciting yet.
Film Chronicles [viaBleeding Cool], are stating that they believe Disney is about to make a big announcement about their cast, something which was also expected to have happened last week, and while it is still a guessing game as to who this big name will be, Film Chronicles think they have discovered who it is. They are reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch is the name Disney are about to announce, and if this turns out to be true, then this is very exciting news indeed.
Cumberbatch and director JJ Abrams worked together on Star Trek Into Darkness, and it turns out that they both adore Star Wars too. There is nothing new about a movie star loving Star Wars, they all do, but the interesting thing of note is that Cumberbatch recently pulled out of Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming horror, Crimson Peak. There was no reason given, however Crimson Peak and Star Wars: Episode VII are due to begin filming at roughly the same time, and unless Cumberbatch has superhuman powers, he cannot be in two places at once. So the guessing is that he has left Crimson Peak for Star Wars.
The rumour is given even more weight after Cumberbatch spoke with Total Film, and said this:
“I’ve already asked him if I can be a lightsaber and we’re in talks – about whirring sounds and the rates for the lights and everything [laughs].
I thought, ‘Yeah, I grew up with them,’ and I just looked recently at when they were released and now I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t grow up with them, I was born with them.’ They were a huge part of my background, and my upbringing.
I was much more connected to [Star Wars] as a kid, in the way that a lot of kids are because it’s immediate storytelling, very simple – a beautifully, outrageously simple narrative in a way – and a wonderful three-act melodrama, opera. And I loved them. I really, really loved those films and I always wanted to be Han Solo. Everything Harrison Ford did I just thought was the coolest thing ever.”
So there you have it, but nothing is set in stone, and until Disney and Lucasfilm announce something officially, this is still simply a rumour. However, some sites are reporting that should this turn out to be true, Cumberbatch is expected to play a Sith Lord villain.
