MGM’s reboot of Tobe Hooper’s classic 1982 horror, Poltergeist, has added some new names to its cast as filming is set to commence shortly. Gil Kenan (Monster House) is directing the reboot, which has already cast Rosemarie DeWitt as the female lead, and Sam Rockwell.
Announced today was the news that Jared Harris (above, Fringe, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Mad Men, The Quiet Ones) has joined the cast, and his role indicates a slight deviation from the original film. Deadline reports: “Harris will play Carrigan, a larger than life TV personality who left the world of academia behind to become the star host of basic cable TV show Haunted House Cleaners.”
The Following’s child actor, Kyle Catlett (who played Joey) is also rumoured to be joining the Poltergeist reboot, as is The Kitchen Sink’s Nicholas Braun.
Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) will direct from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, David Lindsay-Abaire (whose recent credits include “Oz: The Great and Powerful”). The film is being produced by Sam Raimi (“Evil Dead”) and Rob Tapert (“The Posession”) via Ghost House Pictures, along with Roy Lee (“The Strangers”). Nathan Kahane (“The Grudge”) will serve as executive producer.
In a revisionist take on the classic horror film, a family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.
“Poltergeist” is scheduled to begin production this Autumn.
