First trailer released for James Gray’s The Immigrant, starring Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix


The first trailer has been released for writer/director James Gray’s new film, The Immigrant, starring Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. Check it out below.

The story centres on a woman (Cotillard) who immigrates to New York City in the 1920s. When her sister is rejected and sent back to Poland, she finds herself lured into the world of prostitution in the hope that she may eventually be reunited with her kin.

Joaquin Phoenix plays the charming man/pimp who recruits Cotillard into prostitution. Jeremy Renner also stars as his debonair magician cousin.

The film made it’s American debut at the New York Film Festival and is due to be released in the US next Spring. A date for the UK is yet to be released.


1920. In search of a new start and the American dream, Ewa Cybulski and her sister Magda sail to New York from their native Poland. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn and desperate to reunite with Magda, she quickly falls prey to Bruno, a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. And then one day, Ewa encounters Bruno’s cousin, the debonair magician Orlando. He sweeps Ewa off her feet and quickly becomes her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself.
