Harrison Ford happy to return for ‘Blade Runner 2’?

Announced during the extensive campaign to promote Prometheus, news of a sequel to Blade Runner both excited and worried fans, and while there has been no new updates on the sequel for a long time, today we have a tiny piece of news for you.

We already know that Scott is returning to direct the sequel, but as he is busy promoting The Counsellor, and has begun filming his epic Moses pick, Exodus, we will not be seeing Blade Runner 2 for a long time yet.

However, the film has an original draft written by Hampton Fancher, the same guy who adapted Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, for the first movie. Also Green Lantern writer Michael Green is reportedly now busy working on the script for Blade Runner 2, so things are certainly moving forward.

It was rumoured last year that Harrison Ford, who starred in the classic original as Deckard, might be returning for the sequel, with Scott himself joking at the time “I don’t think it’ll be Harrison starring, but I’ve got to have him in it somewhere. That’d be amusing…”

Amusing as it might be to Scott, there is the issue that the sequel will take place years after the first film, and Ford is clearly not as young looking as he was in the original film, and Replicants clearly would not age that much. So if Ford is to be in the film, it is doubtful he would return as Deckard, and may simply play a small cameo role as a mark of respect. After the troublesome production on the film, it was doubtful that Ford would want to return, but today he has announced that he has at least been having talks with Scott:

“I remember it with complication, but I’m not there to generate nostalgic moments, I’m there to do a job of work,” Ford said of his Blade Runner experience.

“I quite understand that everybody has an ambition when they come and do a film, and everyone’s ambition may not be focused on the same thing. I truly admire Ridley as a man and as a director, and I would be very happy to engage with him again in the further telling of this story.”

My guess is that we will be waiting for quite some time yet before knowing for sure if Ford will indeed return for the sequel.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
