James DeMonaco directed the first The Purge, and using Jason Blum and his Blumhouse production company, the film was made on a budget of just $3 million. Even though it had a mixed response, the film achieved an impressive worldwide box office take of $87 million, ensuring the film would get a sequel.
Shortly after the films release earlier this year, Blumhouse were offered a £2.25 million tax credit by the state of California, and The Purge 2 joined a list of some thirty films in line for the credit. The condition of receiving this tax credit is that The Purge 2 starts filming before the end of the year.
Now, Variety is confirming that DeMonaco is returning to direct the sequel with Blumhouse. DeMonaco will also write the sequel, with Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse, and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes also producing. Universal will distribute. No other details have been released as yet.
However, the day before DeMonaco was confirmed to return, a Tweet by Production Weekly announced that a film called The Zone was set to begin filming in December. The Tweet stated that the team of writer/director James DeMonaco, and producers Jason Blum and Michael Bay, were set to begin filming The Zone for Universal in mid-December in L.A
Considering the names involved, the timing of the start of filming and also the location, I am guessing that The Zone is actually The Purge 2.
