Room 237 director Rodney Ascher now documenting our dreams with new film ‘The Nightmare’

If you have seen the crazy documentary about theories based on The Shining, Room 237, then you should know that Rodney Ascher is a director who doesn’t mess around. Whether you agree with any of the theories in Room 237 or not, you cannot deny that the documentary was incredibly well put together, and like it or not, it was fascinating.

Now Ascher, who is currently filming a segment for The ABC’s of Death 2, is set to direct a new documentary which will delve deep into our nightmares. With some of it based on his own experiences, he intends to look at sleep paralysis, and the disturbing imagery that comes with it. Already I am excited, but very unsettled about watching this for I have suffered this annoying and frightening issue in the past, and it aint pleasant.

A press release coming out of AFM has all the juicy details:

Content announced that cult director Rodney Ascher (ROOM 237) will direct THE NIGHTMARE, a disturbing investigation into the demonic visions experienced by victims of sleep paralysis and provoked by Ascher’s own unsettling experiences with the condition.  THE NIGHTMARE is produced by Preferred Film & TV’s Ross M. Dinerstein (THE PACT, DARK SUMMER) and Kevin Iwashina (JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI), alongside the producer of the Academy Award-Winning film, UNDEFEATED,  Glen Zipper. The horror documentary is executive produced by Content’s Jamie Carmichael (THE PACT, BLACK BOOK), who will also introduce the film to international buyers at the American Film Market this week.

Ascher’s hit Kubrick analysis feature ROOM 237 premiered at Sundance, screened in Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight,  won the Best Director (Documentary) prize at the Austin Fantastic Fest and IDA’s  Creative Editing award in 2012.  It is repeatedly listed as one of the must-see documentaries of 2013.

Ross Dinerstein said, “We’ve assembled a great team with Rodney, Kevin, and Glen and are going to collectively break new ground with this film.”

Preferred Content’s Kevin Iwashina and Content’s Jamie Carmichael will handle North American sales.

“ROOM 237 was a mind bendingly brilliant movie.  Rodney has a piercing intellect and a unique cinematic vision for horror,” said Content’s Carmichael. “We can’t wait to follow him down this new supernatural worm hole…”

THE NIGHTMARE is the sixth film produced by Preferred Film & TV (PFT), the joint venture between Content Media Corporation (CMC) and Preferred Content.  Recent films include; Alistair Legrand’s intense horror film THE DIABOLICAL; Nicholas McCarthy’s THE PACT, which was a UK box office hit and release by IFC Midnight; Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath’s THE PACT 2 which is currently in post-production and also acquired by IFC Midnight; Karl Mueller’s MR. JONES which will be released theatrically in May by Anchor Bay and Paul Solet’s DARK SUMMER which is also in post-production.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
