Thor: The Dark World opens in the US this coming Friday, but already the Alan Taylor directed sequel is breaking records. The film opened in 70% of territories outside of the US this weekend, and has achieved top place everywhere it opened.
The film has achieved a whopping $109.4 million in its first weekend, and the film is expected to deliver massive numbers when it opens in the US this Friday. The first Thor film, directed by Kenneth Brannagh, opened in the US with $65.7 million, and the sequel is expected to smash that.
Major territories where Thor 2 isn’t opening this weekend include China, Japan, Italy and Argentina.
Disney brought the Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman Marvel sequel early and at #1 in key territories France, the UK, Korea, Germany, Spain, Taiwan, Australia, Russia, Mexico, and Brazil
The U.K. led with $13.4 million, followed by France with $9.4 million, Mexico with $8.2 million and Brazil in $8.1 million.
Thor 2: The Dark World also added to Disney’s grosses outside the US for 2013, and this opening weekend now puts Disney’s current gross outside the US at $2.3 billion. This makes 2013 a record year for Disney in terms of takings in territories outside the US.
Directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), the sequel will see Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battling against the villainous dark elf Malekith The Accured (Christopher Eccleston).
The film also also stars Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins.
