Over the years Joaquin Phoenix has moved away from the big blockbuster type films of Gladiator and The Village, and has instead concentrated on more dramatic, almost indie style films such as Walk The Line, The Master and the upcoming Her. His career has reaped the rewards, and Phoenix is now considered one of the finest actors working in the world today. However, a report by Variety says that he may be about to return to big budget movies with Batman vs Superman.
Variety reports that Warner Brothers are eyeing Phoenix for a possible villain role in Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, and with the seriously talented Ben Affleck already cast as Batman, and Henry Cavill as Superman, should Phoenix become involved, then this will add some serious weight to an already impressive cast. Gal Gadot has also been case as Wonder Woman.
Warner Brothers would not comment on the rumours, but a report suggests that Phoenix is about to be offered the role of Lex Luthor. While names like Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey have already been mentioned to be possibly joining the cast, Warners are said to be keen on a serious actor like Phoenix to take on such an iconic role as Lex Luthor. Momoa and Mulvey are thought to be playing possible villains, but not the main antagonist.
While nothing has been confirmed, it is thought that the main villain in the film will be Luthor, and there were plenty of Easter Eggs in Man of Steel to suggest this. However, Phoenix is an unpredictable actor, and there is a good chance that Batman vs Superman might not be to his liking, and he might be swayed by a different film as his next project. Gus Van Sant has already offered Phoenix a role in his new film, Sea of Tress, and Phoenix is said to be considering it.
While on the subject of Batman vs Superman, some brief news also came in overnight. Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio has been brought in to work on the script, which already had a first draft written by David S. Goyer. Terrio won an Oscar for his writing skills on Ben Afflecks Argo, and this will see the pair working together again on an altogether much different type of film.
The film, from director Zack Snyder, brings together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Superman and Batman—for the first time on the big screen. Production on the new film is expected to begin in metro Detroit and throughout Michigan sometime in the first quarter of 2014. Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who is writing the screenplay. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing the film, which will star Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
Batman vs Superman is due in cinemas on July 17th 2015.
