A teaser trailer was released last year for Hideo Nakata’s Monsterz, and now the full length trailer has finally been unleashed. Minus English subtitles, the trailer is a feast for the eyes and the senses, and contains some amazing action sequences, some tense horror themes and there is an all round sense of wonder going on.
Japanese director Hideo Nakata became a household name among horror fans and world cinema fans alike after his classic horror flick, Ringu. Since that terrifying film, Nakata has directed a number of very good horror flicks including Ringu 2, the US The Ring 2 and the brilliant Dark Water. He has also dabbled in bizarre but flawed thrillers like Chatroom, and also the impressive drama Kaidan. His big return to horror was the recently released The Complex.
Monsterz will star Fujiwara Tatsuya and Yamada Takayuki in the lead roles.
“When they came to us they explained that they were looking for a project that Nakata and Fujiwara could work on together,” said Lee Eugene, of Zip Cinema, producer of the 2010 Korean original that was written and directed by Kim Min-suk. “ ‘Haunters’ was a film that they watched over and again, and which they wanted to remake urgently with Japanese stars and a Japanese style.”
Here is the synopsis for the original film, directed by Kim Min-suk:
A young thief’s ability to control minds is frustrated when he meets one just beyond his reach in this fast paced Korean action thriller. On a routine robbery of a pawnshop, things go terribly awry and an epic cat and mouse game quickly ensues, taking the viewer on a super charged tour of Seoul at night.
Monsterz is directed by Hideo Nakata, and the screenplay was adapted by Kim Min-suk, based on Yusuke Watanabe’s original. The film will be released in Japanese cinemas on May 10th.
