Oh well, Will Smith has decided against starring in ‘Independence Day 2’

Thankfully Roland Emmerich has two scripts lined up for his two Independence Day sequels: one which includes Will Smith, and one which doesn’t.

A wise decision as it was never clear if Smith would return, and Emmerich himself said Smith was “too expensive”. Variety is now confirming that Smith will certainly NOT be appearing in the sequels, and while no reason is given, it baffles me why he wouldn’t. His career has not exactly been very strong of late, with his last film, After Earth being a critical and box office disaster.

Roland Emmerich is still attached to direct with Dean Devlin set to produce. James Vanderbilt penned the script.

Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have officially signed on to return, and rumours are flying around to suggest that Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) also has a role.

Sources previously said that even if Smith passes on the project, there is a plan on how to do the film without him.

Last year Emmerich spoke of his plans for the sequels, and explained them as follows:

”The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

While there may be some familiar faces in the sequels — Bill Pullman has already confirmed that he is onboard; Will Smith has not — their storylines will focus on a new generation of human heroes, including the stepson of Will Smith’s Independence Daycharacter (played in that film by Ross Bagley). “It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over,” says Emmerich, who promises that the first sequel will have a cliffhanger ending to keep audiences coming back for more. “The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
