Praise Satan! Rob Zombie is returning with a new horror film in the style of The Devil’s Rejects!

I worship Rob Zombie’s horror films, I bloody love them, and last years The Lords of Salem just may have been his best film yet. Sadly though, soon after making The Lords of Salem, Zombie announced that his next film would not be horror related at all, and instead would be an ultra violent true story about a notorious ice hockey team. That film was called Broad Street Bullies, and Zombie has been working on it for two years.

Claiming to be done with the horror genre for the time being, it seems that Zombie just doesn’t have it in him to leave the genre just yet. In an interview with New Zealand’s 3 News, Zombie confessed that while working on Broad Street Bullies, an idea for a new horror film came to him, and after sharing his idea is suddenly became what will be his next film.

In the interview Zombie explains:

“I’d been working on this hockey film for over two years, it took so much research and work, and I was literally sitting with someone going, ‘You know, I have this other idea…’

And I said the idea and they go, ‘We’ll make that!’ And I put together a one-line pitch, because I didn’t want to go to pitch meetings and do all that. I’d call them on the phone and go, “Here’s my idea, blah blah blah,’ and they’re like, ‘We’re in!’ So you slave over something for years and it’s still difficult, and you say some crazy thing off the top of your head and they say ‘Where do we sign?’. And that turned into a weird bidding war. And that became the next film.”

Fans of Zombie’s horror work will be very pleased to hear that he is indeed returning to the horror genre, as the man himself explains:

“I think it’s something fans of the other stuff will like. Probably fans of The Devil’s Rejects will enjoy the most. It’s not connected to that film but it’s more on that headspace”

I already like the sound of this, but Zombie had initially claimed to be done with horror, something he talked about during the interview:

“Now, I don’t even know if I like it as much as I used to, as I spend so much time doing it, that if I actually sat down to watch a movie that would probably be the last thing I’d choose to watch!”

The good thing is that he is returning, and after the stunning brilliance of The Lords of Salem, I cannot wait to see what the man has to offer up next. However, even Zombie himself is critical of his own work, and regards fan favourite House of 1000 Corpses at a bad film. In a moment of honesty, Zombie revealed:

“The first film [House of 1000 Corpses], which people seems to love, is just a calamitous mess. Well, when it came out it seemed like everyone hated it. Now everyone acts like it’s beloved in some way. All I see is flaw, upon flaw, upon flaw… upon flaw.”

I love House of 1000 Corpses, but Devil’s Rejects was a better film in maturity and quality, and if Zombie is promising more of the same with his new horror film, then I believe many genre fans prayers have been answered!

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
