Today is a good day in Captain America’s world. Captain America: The Winter Soldier premiered yesterday to critics and fans, and while an embargo on reviews has been set until March 20th, those who saw the film were allowed to Tweet their thoughts, and it would seem that the second Captain America film is rather special.
The general vibe from the Tweets (some of which you can see below) is that the action is up there with the best ever put on screen, with many calling it “the best action film ever made”. Others are saying it is Marvel’s best film to date, and all are calling it a masterful action film. High praise indeed for a sequel to probably the least favourite of Marvel’s assault so far.
We will get to the Tweets in a bit, but firstly the directors of the film, Anthony and Joe Russo, have been rumoured to be returning to direct the third film, and during an interview with Collider, the directors confirmed they would be back. Here is what they said:
“Well now that Kevin [Feige] said it that means we can talk about it, I guess. That’s great. We’re just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking story with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it. It’s crazy working on it before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to in the movie. You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, ‘Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie’ or ‘this is what we should move away from, this didn’t work so well.’ So we’re just in that phase of breaking story but waiting to see how people respond to the movie.”
With all the positive stuff coming from Captain America after the premiere, a new clip has also been released which goes some way to prove how well the action has been shot, and also shows off Anthony and Joe Russo’s almost Nolan-like directing style.
Now, here’s those all important Tweets, and I am sure you’ll agree that they are impressive!
Marvel Studios gets Captain America better than any of their other heroes. THE WINTER SOLDIER is terrific.

Captain America 2 might be the best Marvel movie yet. Still processing, but it’s insanely good.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is awesome. A tad too long, a tad too plotty, but its action & MCU impact will blow your damn mind.

Directing the film is the team of Anthony and Joe Russo (Welcome to Collinwood) from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus (Captain America: The First Avenger) & Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The First Avenger). Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier sees Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel’s The Avengers) return as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America, along with Scarlett Johansson (Marvel’s The Avengers, Iron Man 2) as Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson (Marvel’s The Avengers, Iron Man 2) as Nick Fury. In addition, film icon Robert Redford has joined the all-star cast as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.
Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The First Avenger, Black Swan) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Million Dollar Baby) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cobie Smulders (Marvel’s The Avengers, How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo (Zero Dark Thirty) as Brock Rumlow and Georges St-Pierre (Death Warrior) as Georges Batroc. Rounding out the talented cast are Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Hunger Games) as Arnim Zola, Emily VanCamp (The Ring 2, Revenge) as Agent 13 and Maximiliano Hernández (Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor) as Agent Jasper Sitwell.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is due for release on 28th March, 2014.
After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.
