Karl Urban updates fans on ‘Dredd’ sequel, “we’re working very very hard on it”

Unfortunately director Pete Travis’ Dredd did not light up the box office, but critics loved it, fans loved it, and eventually the brilliant film found its audience when released on DVD  and Blu-ray. Sadly a sequel was doomed when the film flopped at the box office, and it will take some convincing for studio backing for another film.

That hasn’t stopped the people behind Dredd trying to get a sequel greenlit, and star of Dredd Karl Urban is fully behind another film. A Facebook petition has been running for sometime now, and if you haven’t voted for a sequel then join it and vote, it very well could be the deciding factor in a sequel being made.

Urban has been giving regular updates at film festivals about the sequel: back in May last year he said:

“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning.  It’s not off the agenda.  Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it.  It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.  The power of fandom can resurrect projects.  In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek.  They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

When the film was released on home video, and sales went crazy there was new hope for a Dredd sequel, and Urban was over the moon with how the film performed on home video:

It’s certainly my hope that we get to make more,” he tells Airlock Alpha. “Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for Dredd 3D just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week.

The latest update from Urban came over the weekend, at the Emerald City ComicCon, where the actor told fans:

”On behalf of everyone involved with the film Dredd — from [original screenwriter/producer] Alex Garland to the DNA boys to myself — we really, really appreciate it and we’re working very, very hard to bring you Dredd 2.”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
