This year marks the 30th anniversary of director Ivan Reitman’s classic spooky comedy, Ghostbusters, and to celebrate, Sony will be re-releasing the film later this year in US cinemas.
Set to be digitally restored, the re-release will happen on August 29th, just ahead of Labor Day Weekend, and the film will play in 700 cinemas in North America and Canada. The lucky bastards!
If you don’t live anywhere near there, fear not, for their are special Blu-ray releases planned too, for this years also marks the 25th anniversary of Ghostbusters 2!
“‘Ghostbusters’ is still one of our studio’s most beloved franchises – I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it’s a real thrill for me to see that it’s still connecting with audiences everywhere,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures, in a statement. “On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”
Cannot agree more! Ghostbusters is one of those unique films that just never gets old, and can be watched time and time again without ever becoming boring, the the jokes continue to work over and over. For its time the special effects are dazzling, and the cast are just so darned likeable I can’t imagine anyone in their right mind not loving it.
There have been no confirmations of the film being re-released in UK cinemas, which is a real shame.
On Sept. 16, the “Ghostbusters” 30th anniversary edition will be available on Blu-ray as well as the “Ghostbusters II” 25th anniversary edition, marking the sequel’s Blu-ray debut. For a limited time, fans will also be able to purchase the two-disc anniversary edition Blu-ray digibook, including both films and a limited edition gift set that features an exclusive collectible Slimer figurine.
The Blu-ray versions of both “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II” include conversations with director Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, as well as never-before-seen deleted scenes from “Ghostbusters II.”
“To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we wanted to create something new and collectible for fans. These new ‘Ghostbusters’ Blu-rays will feature the highest quality presentation along with new content that reflects the rich history of this iconic franchise,” said Lexine Wong, senior exec VP of worldwide marketing for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The Blu-ray releases are for the US, but I would expect the universally loved films to get the same treatment, or similar here in the UK.
