There’s been talk of Guillermo del Toro completing his Hellboy trilogy for years, but sadly he has revealed this week during a Reddit AMA session that the third and final film is unlikely to happen.
Del Toro stated:
“Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively. But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from MY side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters.”
What makes me angry here is the sad news is, Del Toro wants to make the film, but no one will back him to do it. Hell, even Ron Perlman has said in the past he would happily return to play Hellboy one last time, and the fans are crying out for the story to be completed, but no bastard studio will finance it.
Del Toro is a creative genius, so why can’t this get made? Just because a film does not quite deliver at the box office, surely the fan support and the constant begging for the third film is a sign that Hellboy 3 would do good business?
The first film took $99.4 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $66 million, and the sequel did much better business with a worldwide haul of $160.4 million, on a $85 million budget, so there is definitely a growth in popularity with each film.
I can complain all I want, but it won’t make any difference, but just to rub salt in the wound, del Toro did reveal what he had planned for Hellboy 3.
“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film,” he said. “He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
Sad times indeed.
