James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy smashed expectations when it opened in cinemas around the world a few weeks ago, and the box office haul now stands at $313.2 million, and counting.
On its opening weekend in the US, the latest Marvel moneymaker was expected to open on somewhere between $65-70 million, but actually achieved a whopping $94 million, making it the third biggest opening film of the year. It achieved top place all over the world outside the US too, with $10.8 million here in the UK (£6.4 million). During its second week in the US the film only dropped off by 56%, which is a great achievement, especially as it was up against the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie (which achieved top place with $65 million).
Marvel is celebrating the success of Guardians of the Galaxy by releasing a new featurette, one which looks at the weaponry used in the film. You can view the three minute video below, which serves as a great reminder of the pure genius of Gunn’s film, which was so much fun it almost hurt!
