Bummer! Tommy Wirkola pulls out of directing ‘Hansel and Gretel 2’

It was less than two weeks ago that director Tommy Wirkola announced that he had finished writing the script for Hansel and Gretel 2, a sequel to his own film which I thought was a lot of fun.

Now, just a short while later, Wirkola has revealed to Fangoria that he is no longer directing the sequel. It is all due to the fact he wants to direct something else first, and in his statement about finishing the script he hinted at directing something before the Hansel and Gretel sequel.

Here is how he announced the completion of the script:

“I’ve written the script for it. I’ve given it to Paramount and it’s up to them now. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. Jeremy [Renner] is so busy these days, I don’t know how they’re going to juggle all of that, but it’s up to [Paramount]. We’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I’m smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that’s an R-rated action film.”

An here is what he told Fangoria about where he stands with Hansel and Gretel 2 right now:

I’ve just decided to not direct Hansel & Gretel 2. I have been lately attached to a few more things, it’s just a matter of time and priorities. I did Dead Snow 1, then Hansel & Gretel 1, and then Dead Snow 2. I want to do something a little bit different now and not just do sequels. I did write the script and I hope to be involved in it. But yeah, I won’t be directing it

I must admit that this is really disappointing news, and while I am sure a good director will be picked to make the sequel, I was excited about Wirkola directing again.

Paramount announced the sequel was in the works in March 2013, just after the first film was released to a worldwide box office haul of $170.6 million. Not much has happened since, and it doesn’t sound like stars Jeremy Renner or Gemma Arterton have been contacted yet to return.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
