Though it didn’t exactly ‘wow’ me [I enjoyed it, but didn’t think it was anything special], James Gunn’s Guardians of The Galaxy is now the biggest domestic release of 2014. Surprise surprise, DC and Warner Bros., according to Latino-Review, now seem to developing their own movie featuring a group of superhero characters whom few have probably heard of. The success of Guardians of The Galaxy has shown that, what with the film-going world totally superhero-crazy at the moment, these films do not need to feature well-known folk. The Legion of Super-Heroes were first introduced in 1958 largely as characters related to Super Boy, but eventually they evolved beyond him, and were then rebooted back in 1994. The team currently exists in the 31st century of the DC Universe and there has been a number of rotating members over the years – some of whom have been known to travel back in time to associate with some of the better known heroes of the comic book world. They appeared in an episode of the TV series Smallville in the Season 8 episode Legion which aired back in 2008.
Supposedly Marvel and DC are currently sending out copies of the long-running comic to both screenwriters and their representation to gauge interest in adaptation. The expectation from there is that the writers will come back to the companies and try to sell them on their individual ideas. This means that the project is in the earliest stages of developement so you won’t see it on cinema screens for ages. It will probably be, though, one of the nine untitled comic book features from CD that will be coming out between now and 2020.
The next step in the DC Cinematic Universe will be the release of Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and we definitely have a Shazam film coming. A Wonder Woman solo film has been talked about, plus a Justice League feature, which will also probably be directed by Zack Snyder. I’m finding all this pretty exhausting and, to be honest, total superhero overkill….though I’ll still go and see all these movies when they come out!
