The awesomeness that was Guardians of the Galaxy was a big gamble for Marvel, and it was a gamble that totally paid off, with many fans calling it the best Marvel film yet.
I totally agree, and while Captain America: The Winter Soldier raised the bar on Marvel’s cinematic universe, Guardians of the Galaxy raised it even more. It gives me great pleasure to report that the film has now passed $700 million in worldwide box office sales, making it the fourth biggest Marvel film to date.
The action-adventure tentpole has taken in $326.7 million in the US and $378.4 million internationally. It’s the fourth highest worldwide grosser this year after “Transformers: Age of Extinction” at $1.08 billion, Disney’s “Maleficent” at $757 million and Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $714 million.
“Guardians” is also the fourth Marvel film to pass $700 million after “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3? and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
“Guardians of the Galaxy” opened in China on Oct. 10 and has grossed $43.4 million since then, trailing only the U.K. at $47.3 million. Russia generated $37.5 million and Australia took in $24.4 million.
Italy is the film’s final market, where it will open on Oct. 22.
Marvel and Disney have already tapped director James Gunn to return for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” due out July 28, 2017.
Guardians of the Galaxy is written and directed by James Gunn, and the cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del Toro.
The film is released on DVD & Blu-ray here in the UK on 24th November.
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
