It appears that the popularity of the Saw franchise just won’t let it die, and the once annually Halloween treat stopped at number seven with Saw 3D: The Final Chapter.
Now producers claim an eighth film is on the way, could be with us as early as 2016, and get this, James Wan and Leigh Whannell could be returning.
Wan wrote and directed the genre defining torture/ trap horror franchise starter, and Whannell wrote and starred in it. Both had said in previous years that they would ONLY return if there was a strong enough idea/ reason to make another film. Both, however, have said they do not want to be called “The Saw” guys, and have thankfully exorcised their skills creating many great horror films over the years, and Wan especially branching out and directing Fast and Furious 7.
However, in an interview with ShockTillYouDrop, Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules have said:
Oren Koules: “James and Leigh…when Saw came out they were so afraid of being ‘the Saw guys’, and they were trying to make their own mark. Now that they’ve made their own mark, they’re very comfortable to come back. We’re getting there. James and Leigh are absolutely going to put their mark on it”
The original Saw film is getting a huge amount of interest again as it prepares for its ten year anniversary this Halloween, and this is just one of the reasons there are plans to continue the series:
“It’s one of the reasons we agreed to do this again,” Koules continued, referring to the first Saw‘s return to theaters. “We kind of wanted to build it up. Our goal is to go to Comic-Con, not next summer but the summer after with our heads up saying, ‘Here we go.’ James and Leigh are comfortable with the success they’ve had. And it’s time. James is in post on his movie. Leigh’s on post on [Insidious Chapter 3]. Everyone has time and it’s time.”
“Who knows?” Burg said, adding with a tinge of hope, “We’re getting closer.”
Wan later told the site: “I’ve entertained the idea. But that’s more of a fantasy, I think. It’s a story Leigh and I really like and…who knows?”
Sounds like things could be moving fast on a new Saw film, but until an official announcement is made, take this as possibly the producers getting caught up in all the hype around the original films re-release.
However, if Wan and Whannell do come back for a new Saw film, then I am sold on the idea 100%!!!
