While we still have no trailer, things have been busy this week regarding Terminator: Genisys, and it’s all thanks to EW. A few days ago we got a glimpse of the four key characters from the film on the front cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly magazine, and now comes a few more images of those characters, some storyboards, and also the first image of the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
First off we have images of Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), John Connor (Jason Clarke), Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) and Matt Smith, all brandishing their strongest shouty faces, firing big guns. Not exactly the most amazing images that’s for sure, but we also have the first image of Schwarzenegger returning to one of his most iconic roles, and even more exciting are some storyboard images from the film. These include:
- Endoskeletons outside a work camp
- John Connor and Kyle Reese fighting off endoskeletons
- Connor during the Future War
- Connor, Reese, and the rebels in battle as helicopters drop tanks in the background
- A frozen endoskeleton in the foreground as Connor and Reese pass by
There are also a couple of images of the key characters in various other scenes from the film, so this should keep us all going until the trailer arrives.
You will find the images in the gallery below.
Director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones) also told EW that he believes the villain for the film will be “visual game changer”:
“Part of the challenge is to dazzle people with something they haven’t seen before. There are elements in our main villain that are straining the capacities of our brilliant visual-effects people. So that’s a good sign.”
EW also revealed some plot details about the beginning of a new Terminator trilogy, but I must warn that the following could definitely be deemed SPOILERY!!!
In terms of the films synopsis, here is what EW shared:
The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.
They then went on to discuss Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) in some detail:
Twist No. 1? Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role. Nor is she Hamilton’s steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991’s T2. Rather, the mother of humanity’s messiah was orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she’s been raised by (brace yourself) Schwarzenegger’s Terminator—an older T-800 she calls “Pops”—who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.
Terminator: Genisys is written by Laeta Kalogridis (AVATAR, SHUTTER ISLAND) and Patrick Lussier (DRIVE ANGRY). David Ellison and Dana Goldberg (WORLD WAR Z, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) of Skydance Productions are producing. Executive producers are Skydance’s Paul Schwake (WORLD WAR Z, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS), Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison (AMERICAN HUSTLE, HER), Kalogridis, and Lussier.
Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones) is directing.
TERMINATOR: GENISYS stars Arnold Schwarzenegger (THE EXPENDABLES 1 & 2, TERMINATOR 1, 2 & 3), Jason Clarke (THE GREAT GATSBY, ZERO DARK THIRTY), Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Jai Courtney (DIVERGENT, JACK REACHER), J.K. Simmons (MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN, UP IN THE AIR), Dayo Okeniyi (THE HUNGER GAMES, THE SPECTACULAR NOW), and Byung-Hun Lee (RED 2, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION).
The TERMINATOR franchise launched in 1984 with Schwarzenegger as the title character and spanned three subsequent films, which have earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Paramount will distribute the film worldwide on July 1, 2015.
The next two films, currently titled Terminator 2 and Terminator 3 (titles WILL change) will be shot back to back, and while zero details have been revealed, what we do know is the exact dates they will be released.
The new Terminator trilogy release schedule looks like this:
Terminator: Genisys – July 1, 2015
Terminator 2 (or 6) – May 19, 2017
Terminator 3 (or 7) – June 29, 2018
