I can’t say I’m looking forward much to Disney’s new live action version of Cinderella, partly because Maleficent, their re-imagining of what is in my view the greatest of all their animated films Sleeping Beauty, was so lame and a bit of a travesty, while this programme the company seems to be embarking on of remaking older movies which are hard to top just seem to me like its running out of ideas. Still, Maleficent did depressingly excellent box office business, so I have little doubt that Cinderella will follow suit.
Disney have released a new trailer for the film which is dripping in opulent production design and what seem like some strong performances from Lily James and Cate Blanchett, but, at least by the bits that they’ve chosen for us to see, seems like a very close remake of their 1950 animated version [though I reckon without the mice], which makes one wonder what’s the point? Of course the resulting film could turn out to be quite different, though somehow I doubt it. It’s not as if director Kenneth Branagh is a sure bet any more after his awful handling of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Cinderella is out on March 26th.
