There have been plenty of rumours going around as to who will be playing the key characters in Warner Brothers/DCs feature adaptation of Suicide Squad, and yesterday Warners finally revealed who will be playing who, and most of these names we already expected.
Suicide Squad will be written and directed by David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) and will be released in cinemas on 5th August 2016. Shooting is set to begin in Toronto next April
Variety confirmed the cast:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
So Jared Leto is the brave, brave man stepping into the late Heath Ledger’s shoes as The Joker, while Tom Hardy will be playing the groups leader Rick Flag. Originally Will Smith was rumoured to be playing Captain Boomerang, but he now plays Deadshot, with Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) playing the role instead.
There are still indications that Jesse Eisenberg may be added to the cast as Lex Luthor, the role he is playing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Warners also still need to cast Amanda Waller, and names like Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey have all been mentioned. Waller is to Suicide Squad what Nick Fury is the The Avengers, she oversee’s everything.
Based on the DC comicbook, the story centers on the team of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.
Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said in a statement: “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Charles Roven (Man of Steel) is producing, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson, and Geoff Johns onboard as executive producers.
