Jake Gyllenhaal passes on ‘Suicide Squad’, two more actors rumoured to join the cast?

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal

Just a week ago Tom Hardy pulled out of starring in Warner Brothers’ adaptation of the DC comic Suicide Squad, and immediately Jake Gyllenhaal was said to be replacing him, and that talks were taking place.

Gyllenhaal has now also quit the film, leaving the role of Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag open. Warner Brothers had no comment on the matter, yet the film is still said to be on track to begin production in April, with a planned August 5th 2016 release date.

There are now rumours flying around that both Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal may be looking to take on the role, however these are just rumours for now.

Based on the DC comicbook, the story centers on the team of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.

David Ayer (End of Watch, Sabotage, Fury) will write and direct.

Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said in a statement: “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Charles Roven (Man of Steel) is producing, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson, and Geoff Johns onboard as executive producers.

Here is how the line-up of actors now looks:

Jared Leto – The Joker

Will Smith – Deadshot

??? – Rick Flag

Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn

Jai Courtney – Boomerang

Cara Delevingne – Enchantress

There are still indications that Jesse Eisenberg may be added to the cast as Lex Luthor, the role he is playing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Warners also still need to cast Amanda Waller, and names like Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey have all been mentioned. Waller is to Suicide Squad what Nick Fury is the The Avengers, she oversee’s everything.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
