In some devastating news for Warner Brother’s adaptation of Suicide Squad, THR reports that Tom Hardy has left the project.
Fans were very eager to see Hardy in another superhero film after his superb portrayal of Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, but sadly Hardy can’t fit Suicide Squad into his schedule. Hardy was due to be playing Rick Flag, the groups leader.
THR speculates that Hardy’s still filming “The Revenant” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio with Alejandro González Iñárritu, so perhaps he doesn’t want to go from that project straight into “Suicide Squad” which is scheduled to shoot in mid-April. Not to mention Hardy also has to lens the TV series “Taboo” this year and must do press rounds for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which opens in May. So we’d wager it’s nothing more sinister than scheduling.
There are now rumours that Jake Gyllenhaal will replace Hardy, but nothing has been announced yet.
Based on the DC comicbook, the story centers on the team of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.
Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said in a statement: “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Charles Roven (Man of Steel) is producing, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson, and Geoff Johns onboard as executive producers.
Here is how the line-up of actors now looks:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
??? – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
There are still indications that Jesse Eisenberg may be added to the cast as Lex Luthor, the role he is playing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Warners also still need to cast Amanda Waller, and names like Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey have all been mentioned. Waller is to Suicide Squad what Nick Fury is the The Avengers, she oversee’s everything.
