OK, so earlier this week Alien 5 director Neill Blomkamp was quoted as saying “I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens, so it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film.”
As expected we all took that as Blomkamp saying he wanted to ignore the mighty Alien 3 and the good but not great Alien: Resurrection. The director saw the backlash as the idea of completely ignoring these two sequels and wrap up Ripley’s story just doesn’t make sense.
Thankfully Blomkamp has now set the record straight in yet another interview. The original interview from a few days ago with Blomkamp’s original statement has now been removed from Youtube, but clearly what he said was not actually what he meant.
The below video clears up the confusion, and at about 45 seconds in the director states:
“My favorites are the first two movies, so I want to make a film that’s connected to Alien and Aliens. That’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection, I just want it to be connected to Alien 1 and 2”
Ah, that’s better then, fans can sleep at night now.
Sigourney Weaver is also in the video, and she states:
“I always wanted to complete this story and it wasn’t really until Neill and I started talking that I said, ‘this is why we waited however many years its been.’”
