Now here’s some casting news which excites me. Charlotte Gainsbourg is about to the join the cast of Independence Day 2, so reports THR, and should she join the cast then I am all for this sequel.
A big budget sci-fi sequel like this is not normally what the French actress goes for, and her last batch of big films were all directed by Lars Von Trier (Antichrist, Melancholia, Nymphomaniac), so the news Gainsbourg is joining Independence Day 2 is both baffling and very exciting.
The confirmed cast so far includes Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and a returning Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson.
Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods wrote the script. Carter Blanchard rewrote the first draft of the script that was done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then James Vanderbilt. Emmerich is producing with Devlin and Harald Kloser. The green light means that Fox, Emmerich and Devlin can release the film for the 2016 July 4 weekend, marking the 20th anniversary of the 1996 original that grossed $811 million worldwide.
Production is rumoured to begin in May.
While no official plot details have yet been released, back in 2013 Emmerich revealed the following details about the sequel:
“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years….It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane”
