The Star Wars Celebration is in full swing, and today there was a panel to talk about the spin-off films, one directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) and the other by Josh Trank (Fantastic Four, Chronicle). Trank couldn’t make it due to sickness, but Edwards was there to answer some questions about his spin-off titled Rogue One.

Firstly, up until now all we knew was that Edwards was directing, Felicity Jones was starring and Ben Mendelsohn is rumoured to join the cast. Now we have some plot details to reveal, plus a description of the films first ever teaser trailer.

Firstly the plot details, and Edwards revealed that Rogue One will take place inbetween Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, in a time when the Jedi are all but extinct. He revealed the new film will aim “maybe a little bit more towards IV,” and said that A New Hope is his favorite film.

The film concerns attempts by the Rebel Alliance to capture the plans to the Death Star – said plans were, of course, the plot motivator driving A New Hope. Rather than focus on the adventures of Jedi Knights, who are of course all but extinct after the events of Revenge of the Sith, it will instead be about ordinary men and women “that don’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy,”

The official synopsis is as follows: “A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.”

The stand-alone films were part of George Lucas’ idea. He wanted to explore all of the stories that take place inside the Star Wars universe. These films will still feel like Star Wars, but stand on their own and introduce new characters and places.

They want the film to feel “real”. Edwards said, “It’s hopefully going to feel very natural and subjective.” He doesn’t want the good guys to be all good, or the bad guys to be all bad. It’s about the shades of grey.

Filming on Rogue One will begin in the UK this summer, but a teaser trailer created by ILM is said to have got the audience very excited. So excited in fact that the trailer leaked on-line earlier today, but has since been removed by Disney.

As with what has happened this week with trailer leaks, is it possible this trailer will also be officially released?

Anyway, here’s the trailer description, courtesy of Collider:

The teaser opens with narration by Obi Wan from A New Hope describing the time of the Jedi before The Empire as the camera swoops over a heavily forested landscape. The camera then pans up to reveal the massive Death Star looming overhead before cutting to the title, with “Rogue One” in big letters, preceded by a smaller “Star Wars” on top. The final thing we hear is garbled comm audio of people screaming.

One image from the trailer has also made its way on-line:

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
