Last year Theo James was confirmed to be returning to the Underworld franchise after appearing in Underworld: Awakening, however it was not confirmed that Kate Beckinsale would return. In fact, initially it was thought that Beckinsale was done with the franchise, until now…
THR confirms that Beckinsale will reprise her role of Selene, however plot details for the fifth film, currently titled Underworld: Next Generation, are being kept under wraps.
The new film will be directed by Anna Foerster, who has done second-unit work and was Roland Emmerich’s right-hand woman as the director of photography on such movies as The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. This is the first time that a woman is directing the female-led action-horror franchise.
Theo James will reprise his role of David, and the script is written by Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter).
Len Wiseman, who wrote and produced all the previous Underworld film, remains as producer on the fifth film.
The plot is rumoured to focus on a new and younger generation of vampires and werewolves who are locked in a seemingly never-ending battle between supernatural races.
The franchise launched in 2003 with Underworld, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Beckinsale, followed by 2006’s Underworld: Evolution, 2009’s Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and 2012’s Underworld: Awakening, which grossed $160 million worldwide.
