Rumour: The second Star Wars spin-off will be a Boba Fett origin story

Just a few days ago Josh Trank, director of Chronicle and the upcoming Fantastic Four, pulled out of directing the second Star Wars spin-off movie.

Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) is directing the first spin-off which will focus on the rebel fighters, and the title of his feature is Rogue One. Trank’s spin-off was a mystery, but we had suspicions it would be a single character origin story.

Fans have speculated, with talks of Han Solo, Yoda and others being rumoured for the focus, with legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett being one of the fans top choices. It now sounds like the fans will be getting what they wanted as The Wrap say they have sources confirming Boba Fett’s origin story.

Per The Wrap:

The next “Star Wars” anthology movie due in 2018 that recently lost director Josh Trank will be a Boba Fett origin story, confirming one of many rumors that have appeared online in the last several months, TheWrap has learned.

A representative for Disney had no comment.

Boba Fett is a Mandalorian warrior who was trained by his father-figure Jango Fett and became a notorious bounty hunter throughout the galaxy. His travels led him to work for the Empire, collaborate with Darth Vader and take assignments from figures such as Jabba the Hutt, for whom he once captured Han Solo.

The beloved character was primarily played by English actor Jeremy Bulloch in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

This also indicates that the second spin-off may not just focus on Boba Fett, but on bounty hunters in general. However, with Disney issuing no comment to the rumour, then its best to take is with a pinch of salt for now, and treat it as a rumour. It’s still exciting though.

Back to Trank, and here is what he said on Saturday regarding his Star Wars departure:

“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”

Lucasfilm VP of Development Kiri Hart commented:

“It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh. We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”

The statement also notes that “The Star Wars team is continuing to develop the project.”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
