Will ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ resurrect this classic character, with CGI?

According to a report by The Daily Mail, Grand Moff Tarkin will be back on screens in Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film will be a prequel to Star Wars: A New Hope, and takes place after the events of Revenge of the Sith, so it makes sense that Tarkin return (Rogue One is about nabbing the Death Star plans).

However, it a controversial move that will either delight or anger fans, Tarkin will return as he was seen in A New Hope, courtesy of CGI. Tarkin was played chillingly by the late, great Peter Cushing (who died in 1994 of prostate cancer). The plan is to resurrect him using CGI technology.

A source told The Mail on Sunday: ‘This is one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever. Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was the one to create Darth Vader and there’s a whole back story that will come out.’

However, even using CGI, there will be a problem recreating Cushing’s legs and feet, as when filming A New Hope, he refused to wear the boots all the other Imperial officers had to wear. Director George Lucas dressed the officers in leather riding boots which didn’t fit very well, and instead of wearing them, Cushing wore slippers. Cameramen had to shoot Cushing from the knees up.

‘They are going through hours and hours of old footage from the horror movies to recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements,’ said the source. ‘It is eerie to see someone who has been dead for so long come to life on a screen.’

Tarkin was Darth Vader’s boss in A New Hope, and was key to creating The Death Star. If he is returning, then is there a possibility that Lord Vader might also make an appearance?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters), and the cast includes Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk. The film will be released in cinemas on 16th December 2016.

The film concerns attempts by the Rebel Alliance to capture the plans to the Death Star – said plans were, of course, the plot motivator driving A New Hope. Rather than focus on the adventures of Jedi Knights, who are of course all but extinct after the events of Revenge of the Sith, it will instead be about ordinary men and women “that don’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy,”

The official synopsis is as follows: “A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
