DEADPOOL shot to the top of the UK box office this weekend with an opening of more than £13.7M, making it the best debut ever for a UK February release, beating the record previously held by Fifty Shades of Grey. It also marks the second biggest debut for a Twentieth Century Fox title in the UK.
Released on 10th February 2016 and based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Cameron Saunders, Twentieth Century Fox’s UK Managing Director, commented: “We are thrilled with Deadpool’s opening weekend success. The response to our anti-hero has been staggering, especially in such a big year for superhero movies. This fantastic result demonstrates the great appetite for Deadpool’s existing and newfound fans to see him on the big screen.”
