Latest Movies: Shane Black discusses Lethal Weapon 5

And just as I have embarked on a Lethal Weapon marathon to get some reviews in, ready for the upcoming TV Reboot, original writer Shane Black has opened up on a possible fifth film in the much loved franchise.

As we know, Lethal Weapon is rightly considered a action classic, that defined the cop buddy formula (even though 48 hours was/is a brilliant film that was released before it) and the franchise was once one of the most lucrative at the box office.

The much public meltdown of its star Mel Gibson has put paid to any chances of a new sequel, even though their recent interview in the prestigious Empire Movie magazine and with the new TV Show on the horizon, as once more brought the film series back to the public attention.

Black who is currently promoting his new film The New Guys, discussed his idea for Lethal Weapon 5, and the man who wrote the original and second film, believed the pitch he wrote was a pretty good movie.

I wrote a 62-page treatment with my friend Chuck for Lethal Weapon 5 that would’ve been, I think, a very good movie,

“It was interesting. It was essentially an older Riggs and Murtaugh in New York City during the worst blizzard in east coast history, fighting a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan that’s smuggling antiquities. And we had a young character that actually counter-pointed them. But I didn’t wanna do what people do when they’re trying to transition which is, they sorta put the two older guys in the movie, but really it’s about their son! And he’s gonna take over and we’re gonna do a spinoff. F**k that, if they’re gonna be in the movie, they’re gonna be in the movie — I don’t care how old they are

The chances of this happening are quite zilch though as Warner Bros a few years back killed off the idea. but there is still a strong fanbase out there and with Glover and Gibson at the age of 69 and 60, they may be too “old for this shit”, but then that hasn’t stopped Harrison Ford to return as Indy in a few years time.

Fingers crossed!
