Well, the 1974 version of Agatha Christie’s 1934 mystery was a star studded affair, so it’s no surprise that this remake is going to feature the likes of Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Pena, Tom Bateman, Derek Jacobi, Dame Judi Dench, and the currently very hot Daisy Ridley. When I first noticed this news, I expected to read that Depp would be playing Hercule Poirot, who was played by Albert Finney in the earlier film but who is a character probably most recognisable in the form of David Suchet. However, it’s director Kenneth Branagh who is going to be essaying the role of the great detective. Depp will play the murdered character Ratchett.
Of course one can ask why on earth we need this remake when the earlier film, which used to be a Sunday afternoon TV favourite when I was young, was perfectly good enough. But Branagh did do a surprisingly good job with Cinderella.
Michael Green will be writing the screenplay, and filming’s due to start in London this November. No release date yet.
