I was surprised how much I enjoyed the two Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies, being a bit of a Holmes fan. One can complain at the emphasis on action over mystery and detective work, but both were tremendous fun and the two leads had great chemistry. The second one didn’t do as well as the first, which may be one explanation as to why we still haven’t got a third movie. The other, of course, is Robert Downey Jr’s commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though things at last seem to be winding down with the latter.
Despite all that, a third Sherlock Holmes film has been in development for what seems like ages. A script was written and was supposed to have started filming two years ago, but it never happened. Soon after that, it was reported that a “writer’s room” had been assembled, but nothing seemed to materialise.
However, Downey Jr still seems to want it to happen. Not long ago he said that doing the films made him “tired all the time” but were worth it. And the other day, he told Entertainment Weekly that he had a whole host of projects on the horizon, including “another Sherlock Holmes”.
I’d certainly like to see it, though I’m not sure if the interest is still there for many.
