It finally seems that, after what has seemed like ages, the sequel to Top Gun has finally started shooting. Star Tom Cruise has more than hinted as much on Twitter, marking “#Day1” with the above photograph. Top Gun: Maverick was supposed to commence production this summer, and we’re still in May, so this is early – but never mind.
Details on the plot are thin, but we do know that the film is set to explore Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell’s time in the modern military director. Director Joseph Kosinski recently said that:
“The Navy is very different now than it was in 1986. Back then, they hadn’t been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point. Now, here in 2017, the Navy’s been at war for 20 years. It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie. It has to adapt.”
Could be good – I suppose. While I’m one of those annoying people who often claim that older movies are better than new ones, I personally don’t feel that the original Top Gun holds up too well now even though I once loved it. But we shall see….
